It had been a long time since we had a proper vacation, so we decided to do something special to celebrate Christmas 2005 and the new year: we were going to spend three weeks in Australia visiting friends and discovering this remote country that we only knew through Discovery Channel documentaries about sharks, crocodiles, and highly poisonous snakes.

We departed from Narita at night on Wednesday, December 21, 2005.
