On Monday, September 17, 2001, Chuck Youngfeldt and I were among the first wave of Goldman Sachs personnel who went back to work in New York after September 11. We took the train to Hoboken and boarded a ferry that brought us to Pier 11. It was a beautiful day and Chuck took pictures with his digital camera. The air was filled with a foul smell that reminded me of burning plastic and for most of the trip, no one uttered a single word. When we got off the boat, we were greeted by military personnel who checked our id and gave us little American flags. Everything was covered by thick gray dust that made lower Manhattan look like an old war movie.

Two years after this tragedy, I finally decided to upload some of the pictures that Chuck took from the ferry. There is an eerie beauty to these images, and when I look at them I can clearly remember the feeling of great loss that I felt on that clear September morning.
